Street Fighter x Tekken

Arriving this coming March 2012 is the collaboration between Capcom and Namco for their long standing stranglehold titles, Street Fighter franchise (henceforth regarded as SF) and the Tekken franchise. Aptly named "Street Fighter x Tekken", it is a crossover fighting game of characters from both the franchise. It will be developed by Capcom and adopts the 2D fighting platform which we know and are familiar with on the SF series. This game was first announced during the 2010 Comic-con International even at San Diego and looks like it is nearing release, targeted somewhere early March 2012. It is said that Namco is also developing a "Tekken x Street Fighter" game which will base on their Tekken's 3D fighting platform. But that has no release date yet and it is also for another blog post ;)

As a long time fan of the SF series, I cannot think of a better combination to hold a fighting tournament with than the Tekken characters! The gameplay of this title is set to incorporate the style of both worlds (SF and Tekken), which means that the SF characters will be able to do all their special moves (and powers) and Tekken characters will be able to string the combos to provide the deadly moves. This games like all the previous SF vs whatever titles, is a tag team game, where you choose 2 characters and you're able to switch between the 2 (for as long as your characters are still alive that is). All other special combo gauges and special moves are included as well. Here is the gameplay trailer for this new title:

It comes with a storyline too, and according to WikiPedia, "the center of the conflict between the Street Fighter and Tekken universes is a cubical object that crash-landed to Earth. The object is of a mysterious origin and researchers worldwide are unable to determine what purpose it serves. The only thing that can be understood is that when beings come into conflict around this object, it releases a water-like energy that brings more power to the combatants. Due to the object's tendency to react to conflict between beings, they name it "Pandora". What this object has done that forces the characters of each universe to come to blows will be further explored in the game itself."

SF has come a long way since the first of all the SF series, the Street Fighter 1 (1987). And from Street Fighter 2 (1991) onwards it exploded and became a worldwide phenomenon. Tekken came in the 1994 but has proven a formidable contender for the fighting games genre. Of course we cannot forget the likes of King of Fighters, Virtua Fighter or Mortal Kombat. But who would dispute Street Fighter and Tekken's union would be a great success?
