iOS 5.0.1 Untethered Jailbreak for pre-A5 devices released: RedSn0w

If you have been following the development on the iOS jailbreak community, you would probably know by now that the untethered jailbreak has been released for iOS 5.0.1 for all iDevices (except for iPhone 4s and iPad 2). Few hours right after the release announcement, I jumped in immediately to restore my iPhone 4 (which was on iOS 4.3.2) and jailbreak it. Dev-team has release the latest RedSn0w tool (version 0.9.10b2) that includes the exploit to jailbreak the iOS 5.0.1.

There are some pre-requisites before you try and jailbreak your iDevice. Click on for more...

Before you jump in, here are a list of pre-requisites that you need to know/have:
  1. This jailbreak is ONLY for iOS 5.0.1. So if you are on any other firmware versions, you need to get it up to iOS 5.0.1. This is very important or you will have problems jailbreaking.
  2. This jailbreak is NOT MEANT for iPhone 4s and iPad 2.
  3. Make sure you have the right version of RedSn0w (version  version 0.9.10b2). You can download it here [LINK]. Update 2 actually fixes a problem which is mentioned in Dev-Team's blog.
  4. If you already have an iDevice on iOS 5.0.1 which was previously tethered jailbroke, you can just run this latest RedSn0w over it again without having to do a full restore. Just make sure to deselect the "install Cydia" option if you do that. Optionally, you can just go to Cydia and find a package called Corona that will apply the same exploit and untether your tethered jailbreak.
  5. Make sure you have downloaded a copy of the iOS 5.0.1 ipsw file. You should be able to Google it easily.
All the rest is really academic. Just follow the step-by-step guide on RedSn0w and you will be jailbroken in no time. Take note that you do need to select the IPSW for the iOS 5.0.1 ipsw file manually during the process.
