My first impressions of Angry Birds Rio

At the end of February 2011, we were treated to a preview of this new game which gave us a vague view of what is to come. Gone are the pigs that use to terrorize our birds and its offsprings (eggs). Gone are the snorting of the filthy little pigs that once laughed and taunt our birds from their hideous wodden castles.

Angry Birds fans will surely reqoice with the release of Angry Birds Rio. The new nemesis, humans apparently! Birds have been captured and shipped to the faraway land of Rio de Janeiro (hence the name Rio). Our birds have travelled along to save their comrades. They are caged and stored in shipping warehouses in which we will see hundreds and hundred of crates and chains use to stack the cages. The objective is to free the captured birds from their cages.

Gameplay is pretty similar to the previous Angry Birds. There are no pigs to be seen in the first 2 themes available in the game. They are Smugglers' Den and Jungle Escape. I suspect future updates will bring different themes as well. This gives the Angry Birds game a brand new perspective, that is, with every new update you won't be bored with the same scenes and sounds. Pretty cool.

In Smugglers' Den, your objective is to free the birds in cages. You will have multiple obstacles and also can make use of other things available in the environment to achieve your objective. Of course the same as with the previous games, you will try to get 3-Stars in each level. Golden eggs are now replaced by golden pineapples. . But achieving the golden pineapples do not get you an extra pineapple level (as in the golden eggs scenario).

Graphics has been improved drastically. With high-res graphics and smooth gameplay framerates, this game is a big improvement in terms of visuals. Lighting effects in the warehouses are realistic there are many moving objects place in the environment (lamps...). The audio department has also been improved as you will hear every squake that a parrot makes or any other birds that squeels.

In Jungle Escape, you will have to kill Monkeys! The setting as the name says, is in the jungle and the graphics are colorful and beautifully done. You will have the same satisfaction (and frustrations...) as you had before when killing pigs. In this theme, the pineapples are gone and your trophies are now to hunt for golden bananas. If you look carefully, you will soon know how to spot them easily. There are also bonuses when you hit flowers spotted in every level.

With 10 million downloads in only the first 10 days, it holds no surprise that it is now the number 1 in iTunes top paid apps. I wonder how long it can stand as the new number 1 and if it can outlive its predecessor (maybe not...). The initial release of Rio sees only a couple of levels and as the levels page indicates, more levels will be release in the coming months to quench your thirst for more Angry Birds.

Time for some Angry Rio Birds!
