First Impressions : Thundercats 2011

It's probably been at least 25 years since I watched the Thundercats. It is one of our favorite action cartoons amongst the likes of Transformers, Silverhawks, He-Man, Voltron and the list goes on. In those days, my siblings and I would religiously watch it every time it was on TV. Thundercats definitely ranks high in my fav list.

So can you imagine my excitement when I recently found out that the Thundercats has been remade? Well, Malaysia is a country which is probably slower in terms of getting new western series, more so with cartoons. So I had to use other means to get a hold of the new Thundercats 2011 series.... It wasn't hard to find.

The premiere of the new Thundercats is a 2 parts series appropriately titled, The Sword of Omens. Those familiar with Thundercats will immediately recognize this title. I was pleasantly surprise that the creators of this new series did not use any fancy 3D or weird skinny characters (as in the new Transformers Animated series). Instead it they stayed with the classic handrawn visuals (which works for me). If you're a fan of fancy eye-candy, 3D CGI visuals, then you may not like this. But watching this new series in all its classic visuals brings back sweet memories of the past. Although, the Lion-O in the original series do seems a bit more bulkier and muscular compared to this new one. Maybe he will grow bigger as this new episode starts apparently within his teen years.

The series is more or less a reboot to the old series and the first two episodes lays the bricks of what is to become of Lion-O (the main character, you should know if you were a fan of the old series). The story is engrossing and definitely holds true to the old series in that it contains all the other characters who we all love and hate, namely, Tygra, Cheetara, WilyKit & WilyKat, Snarf, Panthro, Mumm-ra and Slythe. They are all there and it feels just like old times. Of course the voices are different from the old series, but did you expect the same voice actors to be doing this as well?!

And of course, all the powers that each of these characters hold stays true to the original series as well. Lion-O's sword and claws gives him the power he needs to defeat the evil Mumm-ra; Cheetara runs,.... well, as fast a cheetah; Tygra has his invisibility trick. Mumm-ra of course uses his evil sorcery to try and kill of the Thundercats, although as of episode 1 & 2 he has yet to transform to the bigger more muscular form of his.

Overall, I enjoyed the first 2 premiere episodes and looking forward to what will unfold for this new series. And what more appropriate way to end this first impression of the Thundercats than to say...... Thunder! THUNder! THUNDER! THUNDERCATS! HOOOOOOOOOO........!

p/s: Will they remake He-Man too? Please? Pretty pleaseee...??
